Healthy Tsukiji Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Chez the Buddhists of Hongwanji Temple

Tsukiji's most relaxed, dining cafe is also one of its best kept secrets. A short stroll from the Tokyo Tsukiji Fish Market, Tsukiji External Market (not moving anywhere, remember) Tsukiji Hongwanji Cafe Tsumugi has its own entrance next to Exit 1 of the Tsukiji subway station (Hibiya line). Tsumugi_3603 (1)-1

Where Tsumugi comes into its own is with its 18-item breakfast & as a post-Market chill-out spot

Tsumugi is housed in a modern, open, airy building within the Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple complex. Despite the huge number of daily visitors to the area, it remains a haven of tranquility just a few steps from the fish market.

Tsumugi serves health-conscious fare, delicious sweets (we especially like the matcha aisu) and refreshing herbal teas, also beer and other alcoholic drinks, from 8am until early evening. Where it really comes into its own is in the morning, with the beautifully-served 18-item Tsukiji-sourced breakfast set. Served daily from 8am to 11pm. If you want a healthy breakfast in Tsukiji without the raw fish, it's a great choice. Tsumugi Interior_2335 (1)

Row 2: Japanese rolled omelet (by Shoro, Tsukiji); Deep-fried Eggplant with Minced Soya Beans; Taro Potato in Sweet Miso Paste; Thick Tofu Bean Curd with Yuzu Citrus Sauce; Konjac 'Devil's Tongue' dressed with Sesame & Tofu; Roasted Seaweed with Spicy Cod Roe.

Row 3: Plain White Rice; Boiled Octopus Dressed with Salt-Rice; Grilled Duck with Sansho Japanese Pepper; Tsukiji Kibun's Osakana Tofu; Dried Young Sardines in Sweet Miso.  Tea at Tsumugi Tsukiji (1)

Tsumugi's extensive sweets menu, it's calm atmosphere, spotless washroom facilities and child-friendly attitude make it the perfect rest spot post- or pre-market meanderings. If you are in Tsukiji with kids, or just want a calm respite after visiting Tsukiji Fish Market, Tsumugi's a perfect option.
