Looking for Kyoto's Best Beyond Meat Vegan Experience? Look No Further Than Veg Out
Location, location, location! The setting couldn't be better, perched overlooking the Kamogawa River at the West end of Shichijo Ohashi bridge, Veg Out is an airy, light haven of tranquility, popular with travelers, locals and students, serving up tasty vegan fare at very reasonable prices. It's a popular spot for breakfast (the latest foodie trend to hit Kyoto, btw, but that's another story). The lunch set courses include both Japanese and international dishes. We especially like to the Buddha Bowl, pictured above, of organic rice topped with eggplants, cucumber, lettuce and soymeat. The taco rice is tasty too.
In the evening order from the a la carte menu. The sake kasu and soy cream risotto is excellent. If you get here at dusk, the view across the river and mountains of Higasjhiyama is lovely. It's just a ten-minute walk north-east from Kyoto Station, and a hop across the bridge from Keihan Shichijo station (Exit 3). That makes it particularly convenient for the major attractions of Sanjusangendo temple and the Kyoto National Museum. On Sundays local musicians and DJs come in to play reggae and jazz. The staff are friendly, and speak good English too.
